MimiG Conference Recap! 2017

So I attended the MimiG conference over the weekend, and as usual I was throughly impressed. I stayed in the JW Marriott where the conference was hosted.  As usual we had 3 full days jam-packed with events. Here is a list of the events for conference:

Day1:   Fashion Show

The conference attendees had the option to come up with their own twist in original Mimi G patterns and tutorials. Every time I see the different looks, I always get inspired. The pictures above were my ultimate faves. I didn’t include all my faves because it was soooo much! All the attendees in the show did fantastic!

Day 2:  Class Is In Session!

I signed up for certain classes for this day. I registered for the 1st class called Wardrobe Planning taught by Joy Macdonell. This class was soooo much fun!! She gave me some ideas in regards to fully planning my wardrobe. When I’m sewing a new wardrobe, there are certain things that I need to be considerate of. What’s the season in that state? What are my season colors? etc. I cannot wait to fully start planning my wardrobe in a more organized fashion! Here are some pictures below:

I will say, those Faber Castell colored pencils are what I need in my life!! These are perfect for fashion illustrations.

After the wardrobe planning class, I moved onto the next class. The next class was called A Guide to Lingerie with Maddie Flanigan. I absolutely loved this class!!! I finally conquered my fear of sewing lingerie. Take a look at the pictures below (this was more of an instructional workshop then a hands-on like the first class I was in.)

We then took a lunch break and babylock sewing came to chat with us about sewing machines and sergers!! We also went to the lobby area to socialize and take pictures!IMG_4693

Mimi Conference Recap Pt. 2 (Last Day!)

Hello lovelies!!

Okay, so I am finally going to bless y’all with the last and final day of the ever-so amazing Mimi G conference. So let’s get started!

Day 3

Day 3 was the last day which was bittersweet. We concluded with a segment from Tieko Nejon, Tiffany Aliche (The Budgetnista) and the Dahlia Law Group. Our first meeting was with the lovely Mimi herself. She was giving us tips on how to start a fashion and sewing business. There is so much preparation involved when starting a fashion sewing business. I’m not going to go too much into detail for that because it could be a separate blog post. However, I will say it was extremely informative. Tieko spoke on how to set up and properly brand yourself. You literally are your brand, (how you represent yourself) so make sure your brand is always on point! Your website, your email, your product images, all of that are a direct representation of who you are. Be careful. Now Tiffany “The Budgetnista” truly helped me when it comes to budgeting myself. Lord knows I need help with that. There’s so much fabric and patterns out here in the world that deserves my money: The struggle is way too real! Here’s a website she suggested we use for online banking. The catch is that it’s only online so transfering money can become a hassle. It elimates impluse buys (which I am a true victim of). Hopefully that site can be of much use to you all.

Another set of speakers were from the Dahlia Law Group. The lovely ladies were named Allysia & Jill. They broke down the legalities of starting a business. I had no idea that a client could sue me if they trip over my dress form or sewing machine cord breaking a bone or two. I was so misinformed of these types of scenarios because they have never happened to me. As my father once told me, “People will sue you over anything.” so I am now prepared and made sure to clarify what’s in my Homeowner’s Insurance. So thankful for the Dahlia Law Group for clarifying this for an upcoming business owner.

After that informative morning we took our group picture and loaded up on the buses for our FABRIC SHOPPING TRIP!

Okay the moment you all have been waiting for!!! The fabric shopping trip! So we took charter buses down to the Garment District and parked right in front of Michael Levine’s. So of course I took tons of pictures! However, it was too many to put on this post, so I’ll just post my favorites.

@ The Loft via Michael Levine Fabrics

The fabric at The Loft was insane lol. This picture is only 1 side of the room. It was boxes and boxes of fabric! I got super lucky and got an entire bag of assortment zippers for $2!!! Steal???? I would think so (: So just an FYI for people who are not familiar with The Loft here are my top 5 facts/suggestions about this lovely place! (So I don’t ramble lol.)

  1. Bring a suitcase or a ginormous bag!
  2. Bring a water bottle (it was way too hot in there!!!!)
  3. Bring your own scissors. They allow you to cut your own fabric and their scissors were a bit dull.
  4. It’s $3 per pound!!!! (YES PER POUND!!!!!!!) You read that correctly. Be smart on what you grab. Heavy sweater knits, pontes, wools, will add to your weight. Chiffon and lightweight knits are good grabs.
  5. Come hands free, (if you can) you’ll need all the hands you can get.

I spent a total of only $42 for all that fabric. (I may post a video or blog post about my experience at the Garment District and the fabrics I purchased in vivid details.) Michael Levine was kind enough to serve us lunch as well! Thanks Subway for those lovely sandmiches (: (I love Subway lol, and yes I said sandmiches).

After we finished our fabric trip, we headed back to the hotel to officially close the conference out. I had the opportunity to pull Mimi and Mrs. Kelly aside to give them their goodie bags (: I made them fold over clutches. I forgot to get a picture of the clutch for Mrs. Kelly, but I did get a picture of the one I made for Mimi.

Best 3 Days Of My Life! Mimi G Conference Recap!!!

OMG GUYS!!!!

Okay so I just came back from my LA/San Francisco/ Palo Alto Cali trip. I am going to separate the posts from the Mimi G conference and the vacation. This post is strictly about the conference and my experience. Without further ado, let’s talk about this amazing conference!

Day 1: Welcome!/ Fashion Show

So the 1st day was so nerve-racking to be honest. I was so nervous because I was finally meeting my idol. The fashion show was open to all sewers in the conference. We had to design a look from any Mimi G pattern, tutorial or DIY as long as it was Mimi Gs (: She has so many different tutorials out there it was so hard to choose! It was a fun show though! The prizes were amazing as well. A $2,999 Babylock Serger!!!!!!! Lord knows I wanted to win, but honestly I played it safe. Here’s my look. I used her Simplicity Pattern 8093 for the top and her Simplicity Pattern 1019 for the pants.

Overall, I did like my outfit however I’m competing with other talented designers. They brought their A game!! I loved everyone’s looks. Head over to Mimi G’s Blog to see the winners and the other looks.

After the show I was able to regain my composure (somewhat) and purchase my official Mimi G gear. My mother was so kind of enough to buy my 2 Mimi G t-shirts and the G curve ruler that she designed. Later on I was able to chat with Mimi herself! I could barely talk though. When I’m excited I can barely get my words out so it sounds like I’m stumbling over my words the whole time lol. Thankfully mom came to the rescue and did all the talking for me. It was a magical moment. Oh! I did meet her oldest daughter Chastidy. She’s a beautiful lady in person. Looking like ha mama!

Day 2: Class Is In Session!

This particular day was soooooo jam-packed! We learned how to properly take measurements with Joy Macdonell from Simplicity. It is very important to have someone measure you instead of you doing it yourself. It’s much more accurate this way, trust me. After that, we broke off into our groups for some pattern drafting and pattern fittingDSCF2471

Pattern drafting and fittings are oh so important for any successful fashion designer. I highly recommend that all upcoming fashion designers learn these skills. Mimi G taught the pattern drafting class and it was great!

After this class, we switched and took regular and plus size pattern fitting class with Mrs. Kelly Horton (: Let me tell y’all something, she is amazing!!! She took Mimi G’s pattern and adjusted the pattern to fit her plus sized body and she was rocking it hunty!!!! There’s a link to her blog, be sure to click it and see what I’m talking about. She’s a beast ladies and gentlemen!

I’m going to stop right here and I will post Day 3 later on throughout the week along with more pictures from the conference (: There is so much I can talk about with this conference but I don’t want to overload you all with just 1 big post. So I shall return this week with all of Day 3’s shenanigans. Peace & Blessings!
